All lettering is solid black on a plain white background, with no shading or colour.

The sign painter had lettered every wagon in the Vennor Travelling Wonder for thirty-one years, and by October there were only ten names left to paint. He sat on the tailboard of the last van with a sable brush and a tin of black enamel, working the way his father had taught him, one stroke at a time without lifting the brush. Evelyn went first, on the red van with the broken step. Then Lorelei, whose hairline tail he had to breathe on to keep steady in the cold.

The old showmen said a name painted on a wagon kept its owner in the company. Nobody who was lettered in ever left the road, they said, not even when the ground was sold from under them. So he painted Alice, Delphine, Sophia, Clara, and on through Ella and Grace, and when he reached Olivia the enamel gave out halfway through the capital O.

He sat a long time with the empty tin. Then he took the brush to Anna's wagon, the last name on the list, and finished it with a long flourish that ran off the edge of the board onto the bare wood. In the morning the ringmaster came down the line counting heads, and found them all present, and found one more besides: a wagon with no name on it, parked at the very front, its tailboard still wet with black. Nobody could say who had painted it, or whose name had been left blank on the board.
