Ten symbol designs in black line art
Black and grey · Flash
A vertical column of ten black line-art symbols on a white background, each with a printed label beneath it. The designs include an infinity sign, a family tree, a tree of life, a lotus, OM, a Celtic knot, a peace sign, a flower of life, a Star of David, an ichthus fish and an infinity bow. The linework is uniform and bold, with solid fills in some designs and outlines in others, and no colour is used.

Ada Penhallow cut the parish stencils in the back room of the chandler's, where the window looked out on the edge of Hollin Wood. The brass sheets hung from nails above her bench, ten marks to a sheet, and every spring the gatekeepers came for fresh copies. That March it was Tobias Reeve from the mill, his boots still white with flour, who stood dripping on her step and asked her to show him what each mark was for.

She ran a thumbnail along the top row. The loop with no beginning was for the path that went round the wood and never let anyone out at the far side. The branching tree was for the families who had kept the hollow oak, and the round tree with roots showing was for the well under it. The lotus kept the pond from drying. The three-cornered knot kept the fox from crossing the lane, and the fish marked the ford where the water was shallow enough to wade. She had no quarrel with any of them, though the peace mark always made her think of a wheel that had stopped turning.
Tobias wanted the last one cut first. It was the ribbon loop, the same as the first but tied at its waist with two loose ends. Ada told him it was the only mark that could be undone, and that a gate hung with it would open for anyone who pulled the right end. He asked who had made the rule. She told him the oak had, and that she had only ever carved what it asked for.
When the brass was ready he carried it up the lane in the rain. Ada watched from the window until the lamp at the gatepost flickered on, and then she saw him kneel and tie a length of red wool through the bow, pulling it tight with his teeth so that it held.
