The rope-walk at Hollin Cross was laid out on the green for every wedding, three cords coiled inward from the grass like the ends of a fern, and nobody in the village could say why there were three. Ann Carrow had watched it done for her cousins and thought it was a game for children, until the morning she had to walk it herself, barefoot, with her skirts pinned up and her new husband's hand waiting at the far end.

Aunt Gwen held the first cord with the other older women. The rule was simple. Walk in on your own cord, touch the stone at the middle, then walk out on the next cord along. Never step over a line. Tobiah went in first, quick and grinning, and came out on the wrong cord and laughed at himself for it. Ann went in slowly, counting the turns under her breath, because her mother had told her the spirals always pulled you round more times than you wanted.
At the stone there was a hollow the size of a thumb, full of rainwater, and a single black thread lying across it. Ann dipped her finger and touched the thread, and the women behind her all breathed out at once. She came out on the third cord, the one that ran closest to the churchyard wall, and found her mother standing there with a loaf in both hands. Her mother had lost two brothers to the mill race and had not walked a rope since. She broke the loaf, gave Ann the heel, and said, 'Now the road knows which way you came.'
They went home by the lane. Nobody looked back at the green, where the three cords still lay in the grass, already beginning to curl back toward the stone.
