Montana outline with heart and home
Fine line · Back · Mixed · Photo
A single-line black outline of the state of Montana sits on skin, with a small red heart placed in the western part of the state. The cursive word home runs along the lower edge of the outline, with the script of uniform thin strokes. The image is a close, straight-on crop with the outline filling most of the frame and soft glare across the skin.

Dad had booked the Silver Spur for the Saturday before the hay came in, and by Thursday the fiddle player from Lewistown had cancelled twice, so Maureen and I were up ladders at six in the morning stringing paper lanterns between the rafters. The radio on the stage kept coming back to the wind in Great Falls, which was forty knots and rising, and nobody believed it would reach us until the first gust rattled the back doors like a drunk trying the handle.

The man came in just after the lanterns were lit, with the cold still on his coat. He had the kind of walk that made you think of a long road with nothing on it. He asked Maureen whether the hall still had the old square floor, and when she said it did he stood at the edge of it for a full minute without speaking, then bought a beer he didn't drink. I noticed a napkin folded in his shirt pocket, its corner printed with a state's shape in blue biro, the western side pressed so hard the paper had torn.
Around eleven he asked me for a dance. I said I was working, and he said the band was working too, which was fair enough, so I let him steer me through two slow ones while the lanterns swung overhead. He told me he'd been gone nineteen years and had drawn that outline on every napkin, hotel pad and bar mat between here and the coast, always putting a dot in the same place near the mountains where the snow sat longest.
When the last set ended he unfolded the napkin on the sticky bar top and, under the outline, in the same hard blue biro, wrote one word. I watched the ink dry before he folded it away again, and the wind kept at the back doors all the way home.
