Text quote and cross on a forearm
Lettering · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A close photograph of a black ink tattoo on the inner forearm and wrist, with two lines of uppercase serif lettering reading SHE WILL RUN AND NOT GROW WEARY. A solid black Latin cross sits to the right of the text, close to the wrist crease. The ink appears crisp and even with no shading, and the warm, patterned fabric behind the arm makes up most of the background.

The salt merchants had gone over the pass before the rains, and the well at Beth-Eglah turned brackish, so the elders sent word to the cisterns at Lachish by the only one light enough to carry it. Her name was Tirzah. She was nine summers old, small for it, with feet hard as horn from the stony road.

She ran the valley route every third morning with a clay bottle on a cord across her back and a message knotted into her belt. Old Shimei, who had run it before her, walked beside her the first summer and told her the trick was not in the legs. "The legs give out in the first hour," he said. "It's the breath you keep. Breathe the way the hill breathes, slow, and let the road carry you."
The morning the bottle cracked, she was a long way from anyone. Her calves burned and the sun was a hammer on the back of her neck. She stopped by the terebinth where the goats sheltered and thought about sitting down. Then she thought of the cistern at the far end of the valley and the children who would drink from it that night. She kept her breath slow, and the road lifted her up the last rise as if the hill had decided to help.
At Lachish the gatekeeper read the knotted message twice and laughed in surprise. "You came the whole way on foot?" She nodded, too spent to speak. He gave her a cup of water from the good jar, cool as the morning, and she drank it without once setting it down.
