TGIF lettering on the nape of the neck

Lettering · Neck · Black and grey · Photo

A rear view of a person with hair tied into two buns, showing a small tattoo of the capitalised word TGIF on the nape of the neck. The letters are set in a simple, evenly spaced sans-serif style in dark ink with some soft edges, and the skin tone is warm. The background is a plain pale wall, with the white collar of a top at the bottom of the frame and the hair filling the centre.

The fasting bell rang at noon on Fridays, and it was the only hour of the week when I was allowed to lift my pen for anything but the psalter. I had found the four letters on a scrap of wrapping paper from the cheese cart, pencilled in a carter's careless hand. Four capitals, evenly spaced, like sentries standing guard over a sentence nobody had bothered to finish.

I asked Brother Piers, who had been to Lincoln and back, what they meant. He scratched his tonsure and said it was what the wool merchants bellowed across the market on the last day of the week: a prayer for rest with the grumbling left out. I thought it a better prayer than most I sang at Compline, and I wondered whether God minded the abbreviation.

So on the feast of Saint Gregory I took the fine brush, mixed the blue from the lapis jar meant for the Lady altar, and painted the letters small on the inside of the bell-rope housing, where only the ringer would ever see them. I gave each capital the careful breath of space the illuminators give an initial, so that no letter crowded its neighbour.

The abbot found them at Vespers. He climbed up with his lantern, read the wall for a long time, then came down without a word about the lapis. That Friday he rang the bell himself, a full minute early. The brothers filed out of church faster than they had in years, and I went to my cell expecting penance, though I suspect the abbot had understood the prayer better than I had.
