Two small black lettering tattoos on the knees of a person in ripped jeans, one reading THANKS and the other NO, with the text rotated on each knee.

Thanks and No lettering on two knees

Lettering · Other · Black and grey · Photo

The photo shows a person seated in ripped light blue jeans and white lace-up shoes, with one hand raised in a peace sign and a white sleeve printed with smiley faces. Each knee carries a small tattoo of a single word in plain capital lettering, THANKS on the left knee and NO on the right, both rotated on the skin. The ink is black and the lines look clean and simple, against a pale, slightly blurred tiled background.

By the third night the wind had worked its way into the generator, and you were the only one on the fairground who could coax it back with a spanner and a mouthful of swearing. Mrs Dorning from the candyfloss van leaned on the rail to watch, arms folded, the way she watched anything that wasn't hers. "Ta," she said when the lights came back along the Waltzer. "Don't thank me," you said. "Thank the diesel."

The show had been stuck on the same council field outside Boston for eleven weeks, nine longer than the booking said. Every morning the lads came asking for a bigger pitch, a loan, a night off the rota. Every morning you said no, and every morning the word sat in your head like a dropped bolt rolling under a trailer. You had never once been asked for something you actually wanted to give.

Then Tilly, Dorning's girl, who was nine and fearless, shinned up the ladder and painted the back of the ticket board in red capitals. When you came round to shout at her she was already halfway down with the pot. "It's for the road," she said. "You read it when you're leaving, not when you're arriving."

On the last morning you loaded the trailers in the rain. As the convoy turned onto the A17 you caught the board in the wing mirror, the two words tilted to the light: NO for anyone walking up to the hut, and THANKS, upside down, for anyone already driving away. You lifted one hand off the wheel and let the field go.
