Small outline heart on a hand

Fine line · Hand · Black and grey · Photo

A close photograph of a hand resting on bare skin, with black painted nails and a silver ring set with a pale green stone. A small, thin black outline of a heart sits on the hand below the thumb side. The linework is clean and unshaded, and the soft, muted tones of the photo leave the tattoo as the clear focal point.

Hear this, then, and do not interrupt me, for the well-keeper's grandson always interrupts and the water goes sour. In the kingdom of Mirrovane, which lies beyond the salt marshes and the three hills that swallowed a king, there was a glassmaker named Orla Penhallow who could not make anything round. Her bowls came out lopsided, her beads cracked in the annealing, and the Queen's jeweller laughed at her across the market square until his own shop sign fell on him.

One winter Orla melted down a broken lantern and blew from its glass a single stone the colour of new bracken. She set it in a ring of tin and river pearls and tried to give it to the miller's boy, Tam, who had carried her firewood for seven winters. Tam refused it. He said a ring was a promise, and a promise ought to be written where a man could read it without a mirror. So he took a pen cut from a heron's quill, dipped it in soot and ink from the chapel, and drew a small heart on the back of his own hand. It was empty inside and no bigger than a thumbnail. There, he said, now the promise is somewhere it cannot be melted down.

Orla laughed and said that was no promise, only a sketch. But the next morning the frost had not smudged the heart, and the green stone had turned warm in her palm though the hearth was cold. Down in the marsh, the three hills, which had been listening, let go of the king's crown and sighed it back up into the reeds.

That is all of it. Go and fetch the water now, and mind the step.
