Heartbeat cross and heart on a wrist
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A raised hand shows a black fine line tattoo on the inner wrist. A heartbeat trace forms a cross on the left, then runs into an open heart on the right, with the words FAITH, HOPE and LOVE in small capitals beneath. The ink is solid black against pale skin, and the background is a blurred green tree under bright sky.

The officer at Halse Bridge wanted to know why a woman was carrying hospital paper across the river at seven in the morning. Eleanor Vance unzipped the holdall without argument. Inside, rolled tight as cigars, were fourteen spools of thermal printout, each the pale grey of a winter sky and each marked with the spiked black line a monitor draws when a heart is still going.

Thirty-one years she had run the trace machines on the cardiac ward at Thornbury General, and she had never once read a strip without wanting to tidy it. The officer, a young man with a streaming cold, held one up to the light and frowned. 'That's not a heartbeat,' he said. 'That's a cross, and then a heart.' She took it back gently. An old patient, Arthur Greaves, had asked the technician to slow the paper right down so he could watch his rhythm come out in ink. He had laughed at the cross. He had gone quiet at the heart.
The officer waved her through. She crossed with the spools knocking against her hip, past the customs hut and the flag cracking in the wind off the water. On the far kerb she unrolled the last length. Arthur had written in the margin, in his careful capitals, the three words he wanted kept with it: FAITH, HOPE, LOVE. She folded the paper into her coat pocket, and the river went on beneath the bridge, carrying nothing but itself.
