The wind had taken three boards from the Sayle road before Ada Moss learned to nail them at an angle, and by then she had painted forty-one signs and knew the sand would have its way with all of them. She worked from a tin of black enamel with a brush cut from a mule's tail, kneeling on a crate in the lee of the well house while the sun leaned on her shoulders.

The order came from Mrs Pell, whose husband had walked out past the salt pans one March with a water skin and a tune nobody could name. She wanted no directions and no warnings on her board. She wanted the two words he always hummed over the mending, written so a stranger would read them and keep walking. "Make the It curl," she said, "the way he did when he was pleased with himself."

Ada made the I into a loop that doubled back on the t and let its tail drop down the board like a rope someone had released. The L gave her trouble. Her first attempt looked like a man falling over, so she scraped it off with the flat of her knife and started again. By the time the letters sat across the board at the slant she liked, the shadow of the well house had crossed the road twice.

Mrs Pell came out with two cups of tea and stood beside her without speaking. The board caught the last of the light, and the black script threw a long shadow over the sand, the B and the e lying down like sleepers. The wind came up that night and did not take it. In the morning Mrs Pell drank her tea under the board and said that was answer enough for her.
