Thirty hand drawn arrows design sheet

Black and grey · Flash

A white square sheet shows thirty black ink arrows arranged in two columns of ten and two rows of fifteen, with a heading reading 30 hand drawn arrows between triangle borders. The arrows vary in shaft decoration, arrowhead shape and fletching, with feathers, chevrons, dots and zigzag patterns. The linework is solid black on white with no shading or colour.

She rubbed the line out with the heel of her hand and tried again, the nib scratching on the good vellum her uncle kept for the guild's order book. Thirty arrows, the sheet had to hold: ten down the left for the hunters at Carrick Ford, twenty in two rows for the rest of the valley. Nobody would buy from a fletcher whose drawings looked like a child's.

By dusk the sheet was done. She had given the heads barbs like tongues, the chevron fletching in pairs, and one arrow three dots along the shaft for the river crossing where her father had gone under. She didn't draw him, only the dots.

The guild's rider came the next morning and took the sheet without a word, rolling it tight against his saddle. Mags watched him down the lane until the dust swallowed him. That evening a parcel arrived from Carrick Ford: a single arrow with its shaft left bare, and a note in a careful hand. Send the one with the dots. We have a bow that needs something to carry.
