Metallic temporary tattoo design sheets
Geometric · Mixed · Flash
Five sheets of temporary metallic tattoo designs are arranged on a white background. They include butterflies and flowers, angel wings, chain bracelet patterns with a cross, script words such as love and alive, arrows and chevrons, feathers, and diamond and triangle shapes. The designs are printed in gold and bronze foil with some black and silver, using mostly clean outlines and simple fills.

The sheets came in a flat card envelope from a supplier in Leicester, and Mrs Okafor's boy left one on my counter the afternoon before, tucked under a tray of Chelsea buns as if it had been hiding. By four the ovens were roaring and I was the only one awake to notice it lying there. Butterflies in gold and bronze, a row of little chains, a word in curly script that said alive. Nobody buys tattoos for a bakery, but I had a long shift and a short memory of my own mother's hands.

I kneaded the first batch of dough with flour up to my elbows and kept glancing at the sheet. Tomasz, who arrives at five and talks more than the radio, once told me temporary transfers last about a week if you're careful and a day if you're not. So I was careful. I wet the cloth, pressed a gold arrow onto the soft skin above my wrist, held it while the paper went cool, then peeled it back slowly. The arrow stayed, sharp at the point, a little smudged where the flour had got under it. It looked like it had been there all my life.
The loaves came out at half past five with their crusts gone the colour of old coins. I set them on the rack in rows and the light from the window caught the wet sheen on my wrist. Tomasz came in stamping snow off his boots and stopped dead when he saw the arrow.
"Since when do you wear things?" he asked.
I shrugged and pointed at the rack. "Since the bread decided to be gold," I said, and he laughed, and I went back to work with my wrist pointing the way the morning was coming.
