Black silhouette floral and bird flash sheet

Botanical · Black and grey · Flash

The sheet holds about ten separate black silhouette designs arranged on a white background. They include flower clusters, curling vines with leaves, butterflies, and birds with long tail feathers, with no shading and only solid black shapes. The designs are all black ink with no colour, and each sits apart from the others so it can be chosen individually.

By the time the bells rang for the Midsummer procession, the east terrace of Hollin Palace had gone quiet, and the Queen's head gardener had gone to pieces about it. You were the only under-gardener who could still coax a blackthorn up a wall, so the task fell to you: find out why the birds had stopped singing and why the vines kept climbing the wrong way.

The answer was a long-tailed bird with feathers like unrolled ribbon, perched on the fountain's lip where the ivy ran thickest. Each morning it had left something behind: a sprig of clustered blossom laid on the step, or a single black butterfly pressed flat on the gate latch as if someone had cut it from midnight. You kept your distance and your shears tucked in your apron. Anyone at court would have told you to sweep the bird away, but the old steward had once sworn that the palace belonged first to the things that grew in it.

On the seventh morning the bird did not fly when you approached. It hopped along the vine, pulling the curling stems apart with its beak until a narrow door of brickwork showed behind them, rusted shut for forty years. You put your shoulder to it. Beyond lay a walled orchard gone wild, every tree wrapped in the same leaves and flowers, and at its centre a stone bench where the Queen's sister had once read aloud to no one.

You cut one spray of blossom, the only one you would ever take, and laid it on the bench. The bird lifted it in its beak and sang, and across the palace the east terrace began to answer.
