Thistle in a round stained glass panel

Botanical · Upper arm · Colour · Photo

A pink thistle bloom sits above a yellow-green bud, surrounded by green leaves inside a circular panel. Dark outlines separate the sections, and the pale blue background gives a leaded glass effect. Bold colour fills the design, and the circle is centred on the upper arm.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Ewan's mother had sent him up the pass with a loaf, a flask of weak tea, and the instruction not to speak to the glass-maker until the chapel bell had gone three times. He ignored the second part. The glass-maker's cottage stood where the road gave out, a single window of coloured panes set into the stone so that the light came through blue and green onto the bare floor.

She was cutting a round panel when he knocked, with lead wound on a spool beside her elbow. "You're the miller's boy," she said, without turning. "Hold this still." He held the pane while she set the thistle into it: a bloom the colour of dusk, spiked at the crown, and under it a bud gone yellow-green like a damson in August. Round the edge she ran the dark leading, stitching each leaf into its place so the wind off the pass could not shake it loose.

Ask her the price, the village had said, and she would name something no one could pay. Ewan had brought nothing but the loaf. She took it, broke it, and gave him the heel, which was how he knew the bargain was struck.

When the panel was finished she held it up to the window and the blue ground filled with light. "Thistles grow where nothing else will," she said. "Now go home before the pass goes white." He went down the path with the glass held against his chest, and somewhere past the second bend he understood she had meant him to carry it.
