Thong outline tattoo on lower back

Fine line · Back · Mixed · Photo

A man stands with his back to the camera in a tattoo studio, showing a tattoo across his lower back. The tattoo is a thin black outline of a thong with a small red triangle filling the front panel, and it sits above a black belt and dark blue jeans. Other tattoos are visible on his upper arm and upper back, and shelves of bottles and equipment fill the background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Mrs Aldous had kept the signal mast at Saltcombe Point for thirty-one years, and in all that time she had never run up a red pennant without good reason. So when the grey coaster came round the breakwater on a wet Tuesday in November, flying nothing at all, she stood in the hut with her tea going cold and watched it through the brass glass.

The ship was drifting toward the Sker rocks with its wheel lashed slack. Nobody was on the bridge that she could see. Mrs Aldous unlocked the flag locker, pulled out a long black hoist with a red triangle stitched into its heart, and hauled it up the halyard herself. The wind snapped it stiff as cardboard. Below her, the lifeboat crew came running down the slipway in their yellow oilskins, shouting questions she couldn't hear over the gale.

The master came up from below eventually, grey in the face and holding his cap as though it might blow away. He read the flag from the deck, went quite still, then raised a hand to her across the water. It was a slow, humble wave, the sort a man gives when he has been caught out in front of the whole town. Later she learned he had sailed with a bottle of brandy and no sleep for three days, and that the red triangle had brought him back to his senses the way a cold slap does.

That winter the harbour master asked her to take the flag down for the fireworks display, since it was no longer in service. She folded it neatly and put it in the drawer beside the kettle, where it stayed. Now and then a ship came in with its colours flying, and she would look at the drawer, then at the sea, and feel quietly pleased with herself.
