Maureen had the lane booked for the Thursday league, and the Tuesday men were still hogging lane six when Stan came in with a new ball under his arm, dark grey and gleaming like a wet slate, and asked her to put it on his tab. Nineteen years he'd bowled with the same battered black thing, its thumb hole worn to the shape of his own hand, so she knew something had happened.

He wouldn't say what. He just stood at the foul line with his knees loose and bent forward, reaching down for the ball as if it were a dog that had wrapped its lead round his ankles. The lads took the mick. Dennis reckoned it was a midlife crisis with a finger hole. Stan only grinned, rolled it down the boards slow and steady, and the pins went over like tired skittles.

Dennis lost his bet on the Thursday. Stan rolled eleven strikes in a row with the grey ball, each one a clean crack that made the whole alley turn round. When the last pin fell he didn't cheer. He sat on the bench, looked at the ball for a long time, and said it had always been heavier than it looked. Maureen asked him what he meant. He tapped the ball twice on the varnish, the way you'd knock on a friend's door.

Next week he came back without it. The lads asked where it had gone, and Stan said he'd left it at lost property with a note: heavy, but it went where I pointed it. Maureen filed the note under L. The grey ball is still on the shelf behind the desk, STAN scratched into its side in biro, with the year beneath.
