Heart outline with stars on a forearm
Forearm · Mixed · Photo
A black line heart with a swirling tail sits on the inner forearm, with three filled stars in blue, pink and light blue trailing along its edge. Grey shading beside the linework gives a soft sense of motion, and the design is shown against a dark background.

The lock keeper at Braunston had seen the Mary Dunn come through a dozen times that summer, always at dusk, always with the same brass lamp swinging from the cabin roof. Ada Fenwick did not look up when he called across the water. She was busy with the tiller and the wind, and the cut was narrow enough that one wrong touch would put the bow into the reeds.

Her father had painted the heart on the cabin side before he died, a black outline with a tail that curled back on itself like a length of rope. He always said the stars were what came loose when it moved. Ada had never believed him, because stars didn't drop off hearts. But that night, with fog rising off the water and the lamp guttering, she saw three of them slide past the towpath, one blue, one pink and one a paler blue, streaking low over the surface as if someone had flicked them free.
She tied up at the next bridge and walked back along the path with a torch. Nothing was there but a moorhen and a sodden crisp packet. Then, pressed into the mud at the water's edge, she found three small stones, each one painted in the same colours, the paint still tacky. Under the largest was a scrap of paper in her father's square capitals: KEEP STEERING. THEY ALWAYS COME BACK DOWN THE CUT.
She laughed, which surprised her, and carried the stones back to the boat in her coat pocket. In the morning she set them along the cabin roof in a line and started the engine. The heart on the side caught the sun as the barge drifted out, and for once the tail of it looked as though it was pointing the way.
