Small blue butterfly on a wrist

Fine line · Forearm · Colour · Photo

A raised hand with pale nails shows a small butterfly tattoo on the inner wrist, its wings outlined in dark lines and filled with blue ink. The wings show dotted and stippled shading that gives texture across the body and wings. The plain pale pink wall behind the hand keeps the focus on the tattoo, with a silver metal watch strap sitting just below it.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The night the air went wrong at Hollin Bank, you were sitting on an upturned bucket in the lamp room, threading your boot laces because the left one had snapped at the eyelet again. Somebody's radio was playing dance music through the whitewashed wall. Nobody thought anything of the small blue shape that crept across the ceiling, dotted and dusty at the edges, until Eli Routledge stood up and said it was too bright for a moth and too still for a draught.

You knew Eli. He had worked the coal for thirty years and read the seams like a newspaper. He lifted the gauze off the safety lamp and held it close, and you watched the little blue flame stretch and fold over the wire. 'Firedamp,' he said quietly. 'Everybody out.' The men moved without running, the way you had been taught, boots scraping, names being passed down the line from the cage to the gates.

Outside, the sky over the spoil heap had gone the colour of a bruise. You stood with the other lads and watched the wind come up the valley. Something blue lifted off the fence post beside you and drifted past the headframe, opening and closing its wings in the dark, catching the last of the light as if it had no business surviving down there at all.

They brought everyone up. Eli came last, his lamp tucked under one arm, the flame still breathing behind the gauze. He sat down on the step beside you and tapped the brass tag against his knee until the metal was warm, and then he let the lamp go out on its own.
