Three cartoon cats walking on an upper arm

Upper arm · Colour · Photo

A colour tattoo shows three cartoon cats in a row walking along a grey ledge, with a pale blue sky and soft clouds behind them. The cats have bold outlines and flat fills, with one grey-shaded cat at the back, a grey cat in the middle and a larger orange cat at the front wearing a light blue collar. The photo is taken indoors under warm lighting and shows the tattoo on the upper arm, with a sleeve edge visible at the shoulder.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Fenwick the orange tom had buttoned his blue collar twice before he reached the top of the wall, and still the ribbon sat crooked. Behind him, Mab and Ottoline were arguing about the shortcut, the narrow ledge above the cobbled yard that their mother had forbidden on account of the drop and the gulls.

The bride was a tabby from the bakery on Crane Street, and she had promised to marry the miller's grey boy only if the three of them carried the ring across the rooftops by noon. Fenwick had the ring tied to his collar, a brass hoop from a cracker, and he would not let anyone else carry it. The sky was pale blue with cloud pushed thin across it, the sort of morning that makes a cat believe it can walk forever.

Halfway along, the ledge narrowed to a single slate. Mab stopped and said she could not do it, and Ottoline said nothing, only looked at Fenwick. He turned round, walked back the three steps, and offered her his shoulder the way his father had once offered him a sheltered gutter in a storm. Mab put one paw on him and then the other, and they crossed together, the grey cat behind them complaining about the gulls the whole way.

They reached the bakery window by noon with the ring still on its ribbon. The bride took it without a word and held it up to the light until the brass flashed. The miller's boy sneezed three times, which everyone agreed was a good sign, and Fenwick sat down on the sill to wait for his cake.
