Sit closer, you with the wet sandals, and mind the brazier. No, the cats do not want your figs. Listen. In the reed houses below the grain market of Sais there lived a weaver's daughter called Nefret, and she kept two cats who were no more alike than a lamp and a locust. The grey one was called Ankh, because she would not stop winding round the ankles of anyone who walked past. The little brown one, Sepa, sat on everything and was never in the same place twice.

One winter the river rose and took the lower rooms, and the two cats were driven up onto the loom beam together, where they slept nose to tail for nine nights. Nefret tried to part them with a wooden spoon. Ankh only pressed her head harder against Sepa's neck and went on purring, as though the flood were a rumour some fool had started at the well.

On the tenth morning Nefret found a loop of red thread lying across the threshold. It was knotted in a way she had never seen, and the spindle beside it had been dragged halfway across the floor. The cats had been at it all night, playing at a game with no winner. She tied the thread round Ankh's collar, and by the next full moon the water had gone back into the river.

The knot is still there, the old women say, though none of them has ever found the loose end. If you walk down to the water at Sais, you may see two cats asleep on a dry stone, one resting her head against the other, and a red line looping above them like a question nobody needs to answer.
