Fine line tattoo on the top of a foot, with a dashed line looping past the word allons-y to a blue TARDIS.

Dashed line, allons-y and TARDIS on a foot

Fine line · Other · Mixed · Photo

A close photograph of a foot with a dashed line that loops once before running to a blue TARDIS near the toes. The handwritten script reading allons-y sits along the dashed path, drawn in thin black linework. The TARDIS is shaded in teal and blue, while the rest of the design is black ink on pale skin against a red patterned cloth.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The ferryman's boy had been told never to count the footprints, so naturally he counted them. Eleven went down the shingle at Saltersgate that March, each one bare, each one stopping short of the tideline, and then a dashed trail of wet sand looped once around the old mooring post and ran on towards the sea wall. Nobody knew whose feet they were. Mrs Abernethy said they belonged to the tide, and that was the end of it.

On the twelfth morning there was a blue box standing on the wall, no bigger than a telephone kiosk and older than the lifeboat house. Its windows were dark and its lamp was out. The boy walked round it three times, as his grandmother had taught him to do with anything that arrived unasked, and on the third time the door opened a finger's width and a voice said, rather crossly, that he was letting the cold in.

Allons-y, said the voice, when the boy said nothing. It was not a question. His grandmother had come from somewhere far off and had said that word every time the fishing boats went out past the breakwater, and he had always taken it for good luck. He asked where they were going. The door swung wider. Somewhere with a sky the colour of the box, the voice said, and a shore with no mooring posts at all.

He went back indoors for his mittens. When he came out again the footprints on the wall were filling with rain, and the dashed line ran off across the sand, looping once where the sea had been the night before, and stopped neatly at his own front step.
