Colourful fox tattoo on forearm
Neo-trad · Forearm · Colour · Photo
A seated fox, viewed from behind, is drawn in black outline and filled with ornamental swirls and scroll patterns. The tail curls around the base and ends in a white tip, with pink, red, purple and teal shading throughout. The tattoo sits on the inner forearm against a pale hand and a wooden floor.

Dear Margit,

The fox came back to the lamp room again last night and sat on the iron step below the glass as if she had paid the rent. I have stopped shooing her. She watches the beam go round with her back to the sea, which seems the wrong way to keep a watch, but she has never once missed the turn of the light.
Her tail is the trouble. Since the spring gales she has been dragging it through the paint pots we left behind when the lantern was re-glazed, and now it is pink at the root, then red, then a bruised purple, and the last hand's breadth of it is still white from the wool sack she slept on in March. Mr Pryce at the harbour office says foxes do not do that. I told him the fox does not read the harbour circulars either.
Yesterday I found her swirls on the boathouse wall, curling in the wet lime exactly the way her fur curls at the shoulders, as if she had walked along it with a finger full of ochre. I cannot prove it was her. I can only say the marks ended at the door and started again at the water.
I am writing because the relief boat is due Thursday and I want you to hear it from me first: I am not going back to the mainland. The light needs a keeper who notices the small things, and the fox has made me one. Tell Father the lamp is trimmed and the fox is well.
