A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The fox came down from the moor the night the last tram was taken off the line, and nobody in the city saw it but the baker's boy, who was up early to light the ovens. It came along the wet cobbles with its head up, as if it had been sent for, and stopped at the grate of the chapel where the river ran underneath.

Its tail was the colour of rust on a gate, and its belly was white as the flour on the boy's hands. He called to it, the way his mother had taught him to call cats, and the fox looked at him the way a magistrate looks at a man who has told one lie too many.

Then it went down the steps into the drain and came up again carrying a brass key in its mouth. Nobody could say whose key it was. The boy took it and tried it in every door on Gallowgate until one opened onto a stair he had never noticed, and at the top of the stair was a room full of clocks, all stopped at the same minute.

He went back down in the morning and the fox was sitting on the step, dry as a loaf. He gave it the heel of the bread. The old people say that is why the baker's shop never runs out of bread, and that the fox still comes when the lamps are lit, to see whether anyone has kept the key.
