Three cartoon monkeys on a vine down a forearm
Traditional · Forearm · Colour · Photo
Three cartoon monkeys hang upside down from a vine that runs down the forearm, each with a hand raised to a different part of its face or head. The linework is bold and dark with solid brown fills, soft tan shading on the faces and limbs, and small red details on the middle figure. The composition is a vertical column that follows the length of the arm against a plain skin background.

Dear Margaret,

The snow has been up to the sills since Tuesday, and the three gentlemen in room four have not stopped bickering since the lamps were lit. Mr Pryce says the bridge is gone. Mr Dunmore says it is not. Mr Hale, who is a surveyor and should know better, has said nothing at all for two days, which is the most useful thing anyone has done in this house.
I have hung a vine from the kitchen beam, mostly to keep the children off the cheese. I cut it from the ivy by the back gate and tied it with string, and on Wednesday morning I found three carved wooden monkeys from the old toy box strung along it, all hanging upside down. One had its paws over its eyes, one had its paws over its ears, and one had a hand clapped across its mouth. Little Tom says Mr Hale carved them in the night. Mr Hale says he was asleep. I have decided not to ask again.
Dunmore came down to the kitchen this morning in his dressing gown and stood under them with his hands over his face. Pryce, who had been shouting about the bridge, took one look and began to laugh until he had to sit on the flour sack. Hale just pointed at his own mouth and grinned.
So the three of them are at the long table now, playing cards, and nobody is saying a word that is not about trumps. Dunmore has taken the window seat. The snow has stopped. Come when the road opens, and bring your own string.
Yours, Ada
