Right, sit down at the back where the hay's dry, and mind the goat. You want the story of Dilys Crane and her cats? Everyone on the autumn circuit knew her. She ran the candy floss stall beside the dodgems, and she wore a yellow bow the size of a dinner plate, because she said a girl ought to be seen from the top of the Ferris wheel.

The cats came the summer the fair pulled into Harrowgate with a lame pony and no money. Nobody saw them arrive. One morning there were six asleep in the spun sugar drum, and by August there were eleven, each with a different opinion about the weather. Dilys never shooed them. She fed them scraps of mutton from the Ghost Train joint and let them climb her skirts and knot their tails in her hair, and the men on the rides swore she grew a little taller each week under the weight of them.
Then came the winter the council wanted the field for new houses, and the fair was told to pack up and go. The lorries left at dawn. Dilys stood at the gate in her striped socks and polished shoes, cats draped from her shoulders, and refused to climb into the cab. Nobody argued with her. She just looked at the empty field, and the cats looked at her, and then they went over the hedge in a line, the way they'd come.
Years later a boy from the new estate swore he saw a yellow bow bobbing above the hedgerows at dusk, with a dozen cats trotting ahead of it along the old drove road. Nobody has found the field since. But the cats turn up on doorsteps all over that estate, always fed, always with a bit of mutton left on the step.
