Pink cartoon dog on a forearm
Forearm · Colour · Photo
A bold cartoon dog with a pink body, orange-brown muzzle, big round eyes and a wide toothy grin is tattooed on the inner forearm near the wrist. Thick black outlines and flat fills define the character, and a loose teal wash sits behind it. The photo is taken straight on, cropped to the arm with a dark background at the edges.

Nobody at Ashcombe Comprehensive ever called me brave. I spent most of Year Nine behind the bike sheds with my hood up, and the nickname stuck the way nicknames do. So when the reunion committee asked me to run the quiz in the sports hall, I said yes mainly because Gemma Lowe had written to say she would be there to watch me fall over.

By nine o'clock the squash had gone flat and the projector was humming over a slide of the old school gates. Gemma came across with a carrier bag and a grin that had not changed since 1998. 'Found this in my mum's loft,' she said, and tipped out a battered exercise book. On the back page, in blue biro, was a pink dog with bulging eyes, legs like wishbones and a mouth so wide it nearly swallowed its own ears. Underneath I had written: he's scared of everything and goes in anyway.
I had drawn it the week Dean Pryor waited for me at the gates with two of his mates. I ran, obviously. The dog was my excuse, a way of pretending the wobbling knees belonged to someone braver who had to go first. Gemma said she had kept the book because the dog looked like it was trying hard, and nobody had ever told me that before.
The fire alarm went off then, the way it always did when someone burnt toast in the kitchen. Half the room bolted for the doors. I stood by the projector with my knees doing their awful little dance, then walked out into the car park beside Gemma, both of us laughing, while the sky above the old gates turned the colour of a ripe peach. It was the first time in thirty years I had gone toward the noise on purpose.
