Three chevrons on a finger
Fine line · Hand · Black and grey · Photo
A close photograph of three thin black chevron lines pointing left, tattooed on the side of a finger. The lines are crisp, evenly spaced and solid, with no shading. The image is black and white, with the blurred legs and hand softly out of focus behind the tattoo.

Dear Tomasz, I am writing this on a bench outside the crossing at Vyšné, because the post hut on the far side shut at four and the officer has kept my passport for the second time today. Don't worry. He is only bored, and he has taken a liking to my bad Slovak. You will remember Father's rule about the road boards. The white signs with three black chevrons mark a bend, and the points tell you which way the road turns. Follow the points, he said, never the names of towns, because towns lie and bends don't.

I followed them all the way up from the valley last night, through the pines, and every board pointed left. Left, and left, and left again. I told myself the road was simply a long curl, the way the mountains like to be. Then I came round a switchback and saw the same red-roofed filling station I had passed at dusk. The road had walked me in a ring, and I had been obeying it like a good son.
The officer has just come out with my passport and a stamp that reads like a verdict. He pointed at my open map and said, you are back where you started. I bought a coffee from the machine and I am watching the boards by the barrier. Every one of them points the same way, toward the country I left this morning. I think I finally understand Father's rule. The chevrons were never telling me where to go. They were only telling me where the turn was, and I was too busy trusting them to notice I had stopped looking ahead.
Write back soon. Tell Mama I am coming home by daylight, and that this time I will read the road properly. Your brother, Janek.
