Small crescent moon on a wrist
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A small crescent moon sits on the wrist of a hand held near the body, beside a tartan shirt cuff and a dark waxed jacket. The moon is drawn in thin black linework, with a dotted line tracing the unlit part of the circle. The background is a plain pale wall, and the ink is the only black detail against the muted tones of the clothing.

Log of the Skerry light, kept by J. Penhale, assistant keeper. Tuesday. Wind backed to the south-west by noon and stayed there, so the boat from Mainland could not come. Mrs Tregaskis sent word by the gull-post that the tea is short and she will not send more until the Sunday tender runs, which means we are to make do with the jar of barley and whatever Alec has hidden in his tin.

The moon has been the only thing that kept its appointments. Tonight it is a thin paring, just the edge of it lit, the rest of the disc lying in the dark where you can only guess at it by the stars it blots out. Alec says the old keepers called that part the drowned half and would not whistle while it was up. I told him that was nonsense and he said I would think differently once I had kept a winter out here, and then he went to sleep without his supper, which is how I know he meant it.
I climbed the gallery at ten to check the lamp and stood there longer than I needed to. From the rail you can see the whole arc of the bay and, out past the reef, the faint line where the sea goes black. I kept thinking about the shape the moon makes when it is only half given, how it still gets read as a whole thing by anyone who knows where to look. Tomorrow I will write to Ellen and tell her so, though she will say I have gone soft.
Wind still south-west. Lamp trimmed, wick clean, glass polished twice. The drowned half will come round again by the end of the month.
