Three colourful frogs across a lower abdomen
Other · Mixed · Photo
Three seated frogs sit side by side in a row, each with its paws raised to a different part of its face. The outlines are dark and fairly fine, with soft, washed shading inside each body in blue, lilac and green. The tattoo is shown in the centre of the frame against pale skin, with a black garment at the lower edge and a blurred stone background to the right.

Dear Morag, the lamp was out again on Tuesday, so I had to climb the gallery with a candle in my teeth and the wind trying to take the glass from my hands. You will not believe what was sitting on the ledge below the rail when I came down for paraffin. Three frogs, fat and green and blue and a bruised sort of lilac, perched in a row as neat as hymn-book readers, every one with its paws raised to its face.

The first covered its eyes, the second its ears, and the third had both hands clamped over its mouth. I laughed at them, and the blue one looked at me over its fingers as if I was the daft one. I have kept this light nineteen years and never once seen a frog this far out, where the salt spray burns everything green. Mrs Penhallow at the shop says they must have come up with the spring tide in a crate of seaweed from Newlyn, and that I should stop talking to them.
Here is the odd part. Yesterday the fog came in thick as porridge and the boats kept sounding for the harbour. I went up to light the lamp and there they were again, shuffled along the rail, paws still up. Not one of them turned toward the fog. They were watching the beam as it swung, as if it were the only thing on this rock worth keeping an eye on, and I suppose it is. I did not have the heart to shift them.
Tell Davey not to worry about the boat money. I will send what I can by the Thursday carrier. If you come out at Michaelmas, bring a jar. I want to see whether they will sit still for a lantern.
