The fox was already on the loading bay when I came off the lift at ten to three, sitting upright with its tail curled round its feet as if it had been rostered in. Nobody else on Ward 7 had noticed it. Nights are full of things nobody else notices: the drip pump that beeps for a minute then gives up, the man in bay four who asks for his late wife every hour, the smell of lino drying after the mop.

I started leaving the end of my cheese sandwich on the bin lid by the back door. Sister Adaeze told me off for feeding wildlife, then the next night a yoghurt pot of water appeared beside the bin with no note. By February the fox watched the ward windows the way the rest of us did, one ear turned to the clock and one to any noise from inside.

On the night bay four's man went home in a taxi, I watched the fox from the window until the sky greyed over. It did not come for the sandwich. It sat facing left, towards the ring road and the dark fields beyond, as though it were waiting for someone to walk out of the night and say the shift was over.

At seven the bins were empty and the frost on the bay was printed with neat prints leading off across the car park. I stood in the cold with my coat open and let them be the last thing I counted before I went home to sleep.
