The gramophone in Lower Wendle village hall had one record that still played, a scratchy foxtrot that skipped every eight bars, and Mabel Tiddy's beagle had decided the skip was the best bit. The hall ceiling had been painted sky blue by a committee nobody remembered, and the clouds had faded into pale smudges that the dog seemed to think were part of the act. Old Mr Pryce, who had never once been seen to smile, kept a tin of birdseed under his chair for the patch of grass the dog pretended to graze in. Nobody could say when the dance had started, only that the kettle went on at the second skip and the room fell quiet until the record found its place again.

In March the committee voted to buy a shiny new player with a proper lid, and Mabel said nothing at the meeting but took the old needle home in her handbag. On the first Thursday the new machine hummed, the foxtrot played clean through, and Bartholomew sat under the stage with his chin on his paws. Mr Pryce got up, walked to the cabinet and ran his thumbnail across the record until the skip came back, and the dog was on his feet before the needle had landed, dancing for the man who had voted against him.
