Three Daleks breaking through skin on a back

Neo-trad · Back · Colour · Photo

Three Daleks are shown in a bold, outlined style, one blue, one red and one yellow with black and grey detailing, stepping out through torn skin with red splatter lines. A black and grey circular emblem with fine dotted shading sits above the shoulder blade on the right. The image is a close view of the upper back with a dark background, and the colour ink dominates the composition.

Dear Nell,

The galley's been a mess since Tuesday, so forgive the smudges. Cook says the cold store is fine and the coffee urn is not, and I'm to stop saying bulkhead in front of the purser. You asked what happened with the freezer hatch on the Marisol, and I'd rather you heard it from me than from Dunstan, who will embroider it.

Wednesday, half four, I was scraping porridge off the big pot when the forward wall went bright and started to bulge. Not a bang. It went soft like skin over a boil, then split along the rivet seam with a noise like wet canvas tearing. Out came the first one, blue as a bus shelter, its dome turning slow, all those steel studs catching the strip lights. The red one shouldered through after it, then the yellow, and the plating curled back round them like petals while red spray hung in the air like paint flicked off a brush.

They didn't come for me. They stopped at the hatch and turned their plungers up to the round plate above the door, the one with the spiral and the little rings, and they just hummed at it, as if reading it aloud. Then they went back out through the wall the way they'd come, and the seam closed behind them without a mark.

The engineers say the plating is sound, every inch, so I've stopped watching the wall while I work. I watch the round plate instead. It's warm to touch, and this morning I swear the rings had turned a notch.

Tell Mum I'm eating properly.

Love, Ada
