Dalek tattoo on a calf
Traditional · Calf · Colour · Photo
A bold Dalek is tattooed on the lower leg, shown upright with a dome, eyestalk, plunger and side weapon. Thick black outlines and shaded grey domes sit against a golden-brown body, with orange and yellow flashes around it. Other tattoos are partly visible at the top and right edge of the frame, and the photo is taken from the front of the leg with a concrete floor behind.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction
The travelling show had nothing left to sell but the tin creature in the crate, and Mrs Oduya said it could stay there until someone bought the wagons. Nobody did. So each evening Jonah wheeled it out himself, a black cone with a brass dome and a plunger arm, and set it at the edge of the sawdust ring where the lamps made its gold trim shine like something finer than it was.

The creature had two tricks. Jonah pulled a cord and a spark leapt from the side gun, and the children shrieked with joy. Then the eyestalk swung towards the crowd and the voice rasped out its three words, the same three every night, and the children chanted them back until their mothers hushed them. Money came in pennies, then in buttons, then not at all.
On the last night of the season only nine people came, in rain that drummed on the canvas. The creature's dome flickered and the plunger clicked, and an old woman in a green coat, the only one who had paid in coins, stood up and walked to it. She laid her palm flat on its black side as if it were a horse that had worked hard. Jonah waited for the words, but the thing said nothing at all.
When the tent came down, Jonah left the creature by the gate with its cord coiled on top. In the morning the cord was gone and the sawdust had a track of small wheel marks leading out past the church and up the lane. A little girl in a green coat was pushing it along, slowly, towards the hill.
