Dalek and Cyberman tattoos on a leg

Traditional · Other · Black and grey · Photo

Two black and grey tattoos sit side by side on a limb. On the left, a Dalek sits above a banner reading Exterminate, with lightning bolt accents around its dome. On the right, a Cyberman head rests above a scrolled banner with script lettering that is partly unclear. The shading is bold with solid blacks and grey highlights, and the photo is taken straight on against a dark background.

Dear Mags,

Night shift on Ward Nine is quiet until the lift starts its groaning, and then it's me and Dev pushing the trolley through the corridors like two tin soldiers. You'll laugh, but he's the one who bought the matching pair of tattoos off the internet last summer, and now every bed we wheel past turns into a debate about who's the Dalek. Dev says he's the Dalek because he shouts at the cleaners. I say he's the Cyberman because he never sleeps and keeps telling the vending machine that resistance is futile.

Last Tuesday at three, Mr Okafor in bay four pressed his buzzer for the fifth time and wanted to know if we could exterminate the drip stand, which had been squeaking since teatime. Dev did it with a squirt of hand gel and a very serious face, then rolled the stand away like it had confessed. I laughed so hard I had to hold the bed rail.

Then the power in the east corridor blinked, the strip lights stuttered in that thin green way they do, and the whole ward went dark for four seconds. In the dark I could hear Dev breathing beside me and somewhere a monitor beeping steadily, which is the only sound you ever really want at three in the morning. When the lights came back he was holding Mr Okafor's hand, and neither of us said a word about robots.

Love, Jo
