Three dots on a finger with rhinestone nails

Dotwork · Hand · Black and grey · Photo

A pale hand rests on a dark surface, with three small black dots tattooed in a vertical line on one finger, just below the knuckle. The fingernails are painted a nude shade and decorated with clear rhinestones, and a thin band ring and a beaded ring sit on the fingers. The shallow focus keeps the dots sharp while the background and the other hand fall softly out of focus.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The galley lamp swings on its chain, and you watch the coffee slop in its jug without spilling a drop, because you have learned the ship's roll the way other people learn a language. It is three in the morning and the North Sea grinds under the hull like a slow tide of gravel. Ahmed is at the bread board cursing the yeast, and you are counting salt into the stew pot with your fingertips: one pinch, two, three.

Three dots, Gordon the bosun calls them, though only because he saw them chalked on the fridge door last winter. The chief steward marks the men who get a second helping in heavy weather with three little dots beside their names on the galley slate. Nobody asked for it and nobody admits to it. You started doing it the week the old cook retired, and the dots simply appeared, the way salt appears on a windowpane.

By six the swell has dropped and the sky over the Humber has gone the colour of weak tea. A deckhand you have never fed before comes in soaked, hair plastered flat, and stands dripping in the doorway as if he owes someone money. You slide a bowl across the steel without a word and tap the slate with the pencil. Three dots. He looks at the mark, then at you, and his shoulders come down an inch.

When the shift ends you wipe the counter, and under the lamp the spilled sugar catches the light in tiny hard points, a scatter of cheap glitter you swear you will never admit to. Beyond the porthole the water goes on being enormous. You pocket the pencil, and the slate keeps its three small marks for the men who need them.
