Hester had been sent up to Black Clough in October to take over the heliograph from old Amos Reddish, whose hands had gone so stiff from the brass mirror that he could no longer hold a pencil steady. The post sat two miles from the next station at Cold Edge, and the only way to speak across the dale was light: a dot for a short flash, a line for a long one, and an arrow thrown into the sky wherever the sun had to be angled to reach the far glass.

She learnt to keep her fingers small and quick. Each night she drew the code onto her own knuckles with soot from the lamp and a sewing needle, so she would not forget which turn of the hand meant Stop and which meant Repeat. The men at Cold Edge read her from across the valley and answered in the same flicker, so every message came back the way a face looks in a glass: what she sent left, what they sent right.
In the third week the flashes from Cold Edge stopped mid-word. Hester waited through the afternoon, tilting her mirror at the dark ridge, watching for any glint. At dusk a single triangle of light appeared, then a dot, then a line that ran on and on, and she understood it was a warning about the snow coming off the tops, the first storm of the year. She sent back one arrow pointing down the valley road and kept her hands moving until the stars came out.
By morning the road was white and the telegraph wire was down, but the warning had reached Halifax by the old carrier's route. Hester's knuckles stayed grey with soot for a week after that, and when the snow finally melted, Amos came up the track with a flask of tea and asked her to show him the arrow.
