Crossed lines tattoo on a middle finger
Fine line · Hand · Black and grey · Photo
A hand rests against a dark, chunky knitted fabric, with the palm turned slightly away from the camera. A small black tattoo of two crossed strokes, with a short mark at one end, sits across the middle finger. The ink is thin and dark, the background is soft and out of focus, and a silver ring with a small stone is worn on the ring finger.

Dear Tomasz,

The road out past the salt pan has been shut since Tuesday, so I've been painting posts again instead of sleeping. You remember the system Dad taught us: two strokes crossed over the post means the wash is running and nobody drives it, one stroke with a short hook at the top means you can go but slowly. I thought I'd made it simpler than he did. The council man who came out on Thursday said he couldn't read half of them from his truck, which is fair, since I've been doing them in a hurry with a tin of black gloss and a brush I should have thrown away years ago.
Yesterday I found an old post by the cattle grid with the mark nearly gone. Under the crossed strokes someone had scratched a date, 1987, and a little hook pointing north. It was Dad's hand, I'm nearly sure. He'd crossed out the road there for the same flood that took the bridge, and he'd kept the hook for the day it came back. I sat in the cab for a long time with the engine off, watching the water sheet across the flat like something breathing.
So I've repainted the whole stretch. The crossed ones stay where the water is, and the hooks go where it's gone down enough. I left the old post alone. Come up at Easter if the road opens, and I'll drive you past it myself. Bring your own brush. Mine's finished.
Love, Ines
