Three elephants walking in a line
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
Three elephants walk in single file from left to right, trunk to tail, shrinking in size toward the upper right. They are drawn in thin black outline with no shading, and the lines are simple and slightly uneven. The photo has a warm orange and pink tint, and the tattoo fills the centre of the frame against darker background tones.

Mr Tobias Vane had walked the Lincolnshire fairs for forty years with the same three elephants, and he had never once let them walk out of order. Bess went first, because she was the oldest and knew the ground. Marigold followed with her trunk looped over Bess's tail, and little Pip brought up the rear, trotting to keep the others in sight, always a few steps behind.

On the wet morning the fair pitched outside Spalding, the lorry ramp had frozen and Pip balked at it. Tobias stood with a bucket of carrots and said nothing, because talking only made elephants more stubborn. Ruth, who ran the candyfloss stall and had nothing to do before noon, sat on the tailgate and sang the song about the moon until the calf lifted one grey foot, then the next, and walked up as though it had been his idea all along.
That evening the three of them made their slow circuit of the car park, the lamps of the rides flickering on behind them. Tobias noticed that Pip had stopped following at a distance. The little one was walking in the exact dents Bess's feet had left in the mud, placing each step where a larger foot had been, so that from the gate it looked like a single long animal with a shorter tail.
Ruth bought a cup of tea and watched them go. "He'll outgrow that," she said. Tobias shook his head. "He'll outgrow the lorry. Not the path."
