Three elephants walking in a row
Fine line · Other · Black and grey · Photo
The tattoo shows three elephants walking nose to tail in a single line, the smallest at the left and the largest at the right with its trunk raised. The linework is fine and dark, and the bodies are filled with small dots and patterning to suggest texture. The design is black ink only and sits on a plain area of skin against a grey knitted top.

Brother Tobias had counted the elephants every morning since the gate was repaired, and every morning there were three. The smallest, Mali, always walked first, testing the mud with her trunk as if she had been sent ahead to report on it. Her mother came second, grey-dusted and patient, and the bull at the back, whose tusks had been sawn short by a dealer years before, carried the water barrels up the switchback path without being asked.

The monastery sat above the tea terraces where the road gave out. Nobody had sent the elephants there. They had simply arrived one wet spring, following an old salt route that the brothers still marked on their maps though no salt had moved along it for a century. Abbot Hieronymus wanted them sold to a zoo in Colombo. Tobias argued for a month, and then the abbot asked him to take them down to the river himself, which was either a punishment or a kindness, and Tobias never decided which.
On the last morning of the rains they walked the path in their line, nose to tail, the little one stopping at each bend to wait. At the top of the ridge the bull lifted his trunk towards the bell tower, as if he meant to ring it. Tobias laughed, which he had not done in a long time, and the sound went down the valley and came back to him off the hills.
