Dear Nan, the cat came up out of the sea in the lamp room's tin box the morning after the gale, soaked to a stick and furious about it. Father says she belongs to the Ferris boat, which went down off the point in March, so she belongs to nobody, and nobody is what we are feeding now.

She has eyes like a pair of saucers and stares at everything as if it owes her an explanation. The ball is a float Mr Ledger left on the step, dark glass wrapped in a net of green twine. She will not let it out of her paws. When the beam swings round at dusk she sits up very straight and watches each pass as though she is counting them, and I have decided she is the only one of us who keeps proper watch.

On Tuesday she caught three mice in the store and laid them at Father's boots like a receipt. He was not pleased, but he laughed, which I have not heard him do since Mother's letter came. He still calls her the cat, and she still answers to nothing.

I have named her Lamplight, though Father insists on Tuesday. Tell Uncle Iain the float is not for playing with. She has learned to carry it to the door when the supply boat comes in, and she sets it down on the step and waits for someone to take it off her. Yours, Ada. P.S. She has taken to sleeping on the chart table, which I suppose makes her the harbourmaster.
