Three feathers on a shoulder
Fine line · Shoulder · Black and grey · Photo
Three feathers are tattooed across the upper back and shoulder, each drawn at a slight diagonal. The feathers use fine, detailed linework with soft shading along the barbs and quills. The image is black and white, with a plain white brick wall behind and the subject's hair falling at the top left.

The third bag was the one that moved when nobody was touching it. Ruth Pennock had worked the crossing at Gretna for eleven years and knew the difference between bedding and something alive, so she unzipped it on the steel counter while the lorries idled behind the yellow line.

Inside were pillows, two of them, stuffed so tight the seams had gone shiny. A man in a damp anorak watched her hands. "Goose," he said. "From my grandmother's farm outside Kraków. She died in March and my sister wants them for her daughter, who is making wings for the school nativity. Nothing else. I wrote it on the form."
The form said nothing about feathers. Ruth pulled a loose one from the seam, grey and long, a quill that flexed like a blade of grass when she let it go. The barbs were fine as hair and sprang back together where she had parted them. She could have fined him, or sent the pillows off for fumigation, and she thought about the paperwork that would follow for a week. Instead she held the feather up to the strip light and watched its shadow slant across the steel, leaning the way a sketch leans when the artist means it to fly.
She stamped the form, cleared the bag and handed back the pillows. When the man reached the door the extractor fan clicked on and the feather lifted off the counter, turned twice, and settled on the floor by her boot. She picked it up, smoothed it between finger and thumb until the barbs lay flat, and slid it into her breast pocket behind her badge, where it stayed for the rest of the shift.
