Leafy sprig flash sheet

Botanical · Black and grey · Flash

The sheet shows many leafy branch designs at different angles, drawn as outlined sprigs with small oval leaves and as solid black silhouette sprigs. The linework is clean and even, with no shading, and the leaves are simply outlined or filled in black. The plain off-white background and the spread of designs across the sheet make it look like a set of tattoo flash.

The print room on Alder Street stayed open until two because Mr Okafor's presses ran cheaper after midnight, and I was the one who kept the lights on. That was the night the sheet came through the door, soft at the corners, a dozen sprigs drawn in pencil and then inked by someone with a steady hand and no patience for shading.

Ruth Calloway had drawn them for her nursery in Hove in the years before it closed, so the note on the back said in biro. The outlined ones were for customers who wanted something light, and the black ones were for the men who came in asking for stems that looked cut from a hedge. I ran fifty copies at three in the morning while the city threw orange light off the wet cobbles and a night bus sighed at the kerb.

By the fourth copy I noticed the outlined sprigs had no fill at all, only the clean loop of each leaf, as though she had meant them to stay empty until someone chose what to grow in them. The black ones were the ones she had sold. The pale ones she had kept back, and beside each she had written not yet in pencil.

I pinned the master sheet above the press to dry. In the morning the first tram ran past the window and its light slid across the paper, so that for a second every sprig seemed to be climbing the glass toward the street. I left the sheet there another day before I took it down.
