Three gem emblems in a triangle on a forearm
Realism · Forearm · Colour · Photo
The tattoo shows three gem-like emblems arranged inside a large grey triangle: a faceted red emblem at the top, a blue triple-swirl emblem at the lower left and a green faceted emblem at the lower right. The gems use detailed highlights and soft shading to give a glossy, dimensional look, while the triangle is rendered in grey tones behind them. The composition is centred on a pale forearm against a dark background.

The lamp locker on the Mary Ellen had three brass hooks, and each hook held a glass someone had painted a long time ago. Red for port, green for starboard, and the blue one Grandad called the fleet light, because it was the only one never switched off until every boat was tied up. I was sixteen the winter I first climbed down to the locker alone, my hands raw from hauling, and found the blue glass cracked clean across.

Dad was ashore with the flu, so it was me and Tomasz, the Polish lad who never said more than four words at a time, with my cousin Ellis on the Sea Hare two hundred yards off our stern. We ran the nets out past the Skerrow bank in a wind that turned the spray to needles. By four o'clock the light had gone, and the Sea Hare's engine note dropped out of the dark like a stone.
I did not wait for permission. I took the spare blue glass from the back of the locker, wrapped it in a tea towel and went forward to the bow, where Tomasz held my belt while I wedged the lamp into the rail and struck matches with fingers I could no longer feel. Ellis answered with a long ragged blast from his horn, then another, then the faint dab of his deck lamp. We walked the two boats home by that blue light, one flash every few seconds, until the harbour wall rose up grey and certain.
Next morning Dad came down with his coat buttoned wrong and stared at the empty hook for a long time. He didn't scold me. He unwrapped the cracked glass, held it up to the window, then wrapped it again and put it in my hands, saying the fleet light was mine to carry now.
