Brother Anselm was cellarer at the abbey of Saint Wenna on the fen, and he counted the tithe money every night by one candle. The notes were thin and green, and they came in from the farms in bundles tied with wet string, smelling of cattle and rain.

In the hard frost of that year he began to take a little for himself, a note here and there, folded small into his sleeve. One night, while he counted, a draught came under the cellar door and four notes lifted from the table. They fanned themselves in the air like a card player's hand, and in the middle of each was an eye, yellow as a candle flame, with a dark pupil that followed him round the room.

A hand came up out of the shadow beneath them, long-fingered and cold, and held the fan steady. Anselm dropped to his knees and confessed everything: every note, every sleeve, every lie he had told the abbot. The hand waited. Then it tucked the notes back into the bundle, laid the bundle square on the table, and said nothing at all.

In the morning the abbot found the chest locked and the accounts exact to the penny. Anselm kept his post for thirty years and never again counted by candle. On clear nights over the fen, the old monks said, four small blue stars rose in a row above the reeds, and they stayed there until dawn, watching the cellar window.
