Three-line quote in serif lettering on an arm
Lettering · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A photograph of a three-line phrase tattooed in black serif lettering across the inner arm, with each line slightly offset from the one above. The letters are crisp and even, with solid black ink and no visible shading. The skin tone is pale and the background is dark, which keeps the text as the clear focus of the frame.

The stone came off the boat at Saltcombe on a Tuesday, grey as dishwater and twice as heavy, and Mr Adair stood on the quay with his hands in his coat and told me to stop fussing with the rule. I had measured the block three times. He wanted the lines cut by eye.

"Three lines," he said. "Plain serif, no flourish. The client wants it to sound like a prayer that has given up expecting an answer." He wrote the words on the back of a tide table in pencil, each line sitting a fraction lower than the one above, as though they were walking down the slipway toward the water. I asked him why the offset. He said the eye needs somewhere to fall.
I cut for six days. The first line came out clean, the second ran a hair wide in the serifs, and the third I ruined when the gulls went up off the harbour wall and my hand jumped. Adair made me chip it back and recut. By the Sunday the block was smaller by a thumb's width, and the letters had a rhythm I could never have planned: each line starting a little further left than the last, never quite finishing where it began.
When the widow came to collect it she ran her thumb along the top line and frowned. "It isn't finished," she said. Adair said nothing. After a while she paid him in coins still warm from her pocket and carried the stone out under one arm, the way you'd carry a loaf. I watched her go down the slipway, and the third line caught the low sun, its last letter bitten short where my chisel had slipped.
