Small wrist tattoo of three red and pink lip prints above four lines of black serif lettering, on a forearm against green grass.

Three lip prints and text on a wrist

Lettering · Forearm · Mixed · Photo

The design shows three lip prints, two bright red and one lighter pink, arranged in a row above four lines of black serif capitals. The lettering is crisp and evenly weighted, and the lips are rendered with solid colour and small highlights in the lip creases. The tattoo sits on the inner wrist, with a blurred green lawn behind it and soft daylight across the skin.

The lost property office at Ludlow station had seen most things by Sunday morning: umbrellas, a tuba, a wedding veil stuffed in a bin bag. It had never seen a notice written in lipstick. Maggie had pressed three kisses onto the back of a train timetable, two bright red and one the pale pink of a wafer biscuit, then printed the words underneath in capitals with little feet on the letters, the way she printed everything that weekend.

The clerk squinted through her reading glasses. "Property of Tash's bachelorette party," she read aloud. "If lost, please buy me a drink." She looked up. "Is she lost, or is it the sash?"

"Both," said Maggie. "She wandered off after the ghost tour at the castle on Friday night. The tiara went with her. So did the good Prosecco, and the only map." She tapped the timetable. "We found the bottle in the moat, which the man at the gate says is not allowed, and we found Tash at four in the morning, asleep on the keep steps with a swan's feather in her hair and a stranger's coat over her knees."

The clerk turned the timetable over. On the reverse, in a looping, cheerful hand, someone had written: Found me. Owe you a drink. Owe you three.

"Well," the clerk said, stamping the form with a sound like a small gunshot. "That's a claim." She slid the timetable into a clear plastic sleeve and pinned it to the board beside a single left glove, a dog lead and a hat shaped like a cheese.
