Printed quote and red lips on a wrist
Other · Mixed · Photo
A close photograph of a wrist with a black printed quote in a plain typeface, reading that the wearer belongs with a bachelorette party and asking for a drink if lost. A red lip print sits beside the final lines. The ink looks like a temporary tattoo, and the lettering is set at a slight angle across the wrist against a soft white knitted fabric.

The last number 9 out of Margate on a Saturday is mostly rain, chip paper and people who have lost count of their drinks. I have driven it for eleven years and I know which passengers will need the bin bag before the Westgate turn. The hen party got on at the seafront with a pipe-cleaner tiara, a sash that said BRIDE SQUAD, and a bride called Sam who kept telling everyone her mum had wept over the gravy boat.

Tegan sat right behind me with her wrist held up to the cab light like a boarding pass. Someone had printed a message across it in plain black type, tilted so the lines ran off the bone: I belong with Sam's Bachelorette Party. If I'm lost, please buy me a drink. A red lip print sat beside the last line, the kind a stranger leaves behind after a good-natured argument at the bar. "It's for the lads at the chippy," she told me, as if I'd asked. "They're meant to be the honest ones."
At Broadstairs she stood up too fast, missed the pole and caught my grab rail with that wrist, smack, loud enough to make the others shriek. I read the words out loud to stop her wandering off, the way you'd read a child a road sign. Two stops later the bus emptied, and the bride's last friend lifted her arm at the kerb as if she were hailing a cab. A lad from the chippy was waiting under the shelter with a paper bag of scraps. He read her wrist in the orange light, grinned, and asked what she'd like.
Vimto, she said. Fine. I wrote it on the manifest under lost property.
