Three matryoshka dolls on forearms
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
Three nesting doll tattoos sit side by side on forearms, each showing a matryoshka with a headscarf and a patterned dress. The linework is dark and even, with fine detail in the floral patterns and light shading on the dresses. The dolls shrink in size from left to right, and the plain background of skin and clothing keeps the focus on the designs.

The ovens were already ticking when you unlocked the back door of Hadley's on Fenner Street, the flour sacks still holding the night's warmth. Your aunt Ludmila had left a note pinned to the proving rack in her square capitals: CHECK THE RYE. DO NOT LET THE BIG ONE TOUCH THE WALL. You read it twice, the way you always did, because her English went stranger when she was tired and you liked hearing her voice in it.

The three dolls sat on the shelf above the sink where she had lined them up years ago, the largest painted in blue and ochre, the middle one in red, the smallest hardly bigger than a thumb. Nobody was allowed to open them. Out front the street lamp buzzed and a fox crossed the car park with the unhurried air of a customer. You weighed the dough by hand, folding it over itself until it stopped clinging to your wrists.
At quarter to five the first van rattled past and the window turned from black to the colour of weak tea. You took the smallest doll down and turned it over. Under the base, in pencil so faint it had nearly gone, someone had written a date and the single word ENOUGH. You had no idea whether it meant the bread or the year.
You set the doll back in its place, dusted the flour from your palms, and slid the first tray into the oven. The rye would take forty minutes. Beyond the glass the sky over the bins was going pale as milk, and for once you were in no hurry for it to finish.
