Mountain and wave tattoos on forearms

Dotwork · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

Two black circular tattoos sit side by side on a pair of forearms, one showing a mountain range and the other a large curling wave with spray. The mountains are built from fine line outlines filled with dotwork and light grey shading, while the wave combines dotted texture with bold contour lines. The ink is black and grey, and the photograph is framed tightly on the arms against a pale lace fabric.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Pell had been picking plums since before the wasps woke, and the basket was still only half full when her brother came up the orchard path with the sea on his boots. He had walked the coast road from Brackwater, which nobody did in August, because a carter had told him the old woman at the top of the hill was dying and wanted the two of them together.

Old Mother Hesketh had kept the orchard on the north side of the hill for longer than the parish register. She had no children. She had two spoons, two stools and a pair of dogs named after weather. When Pell and Tam were small she had told them the world was two circles, one of hill and one of water, and that each child would have to carry one for the other, or else the apples would split on the branch.

Pell hadn't believed it then. She did now, because the plums had gone sour overnight and the apple boughs were bowing towards the sea as though someone out there was calling them by name.

They climbed to the old woman's door together. Inside, on the table, lay two round slates. On one she had scratched a range of peaks, and on the other a curl of water rising over its own crest. Hesketh pushed them across without a word. Pell took the mountain, Tam took the wave, and when they carried them down the hill at dusk the wind dropped flat, and every apple on the north slope stayed where it hung.
