Stacked triangles on three wrists
Geometric · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
Three wrists are pressed together, each showing three small triangles stacked vertically. Within each group, some triangles are outlined and others are solid black fill, with clean, even linework. The ink is black on skin, and the plain background of wood flooring and clothing keeps the focus on the designs.

Sit close, the lot of you, because the water never waits on a slow tale. Down at Hollin Lock there were three sisters who kept the gates between them, Mab, Nell and Joan Fenwick, and their father painted the day-marks on the balance beams the way his father had before him. A hollow triangle meant the channel was clear. A solid one meant hold back at the gate and wait for the bell.

The sisters fell out the summer Joan married a boatman from the upper reach. Nobody remembers what it was about, only that the house went quiet for a month. Come autumn each of them took up a brush and began stacking her own marks on the cottage door, three to a column, so that only a Fenwick could read which sister had said what. Mab put a solid one at the top. Nell buried one in the middle. Joan, who never could keep her temper for long, painted all three hollow, then sat on the step and cried at her own work.
Then came the November flood, black water up to the willows, and the lighter Verity coming down in the dark with a lad asleep on her deck. Nell saw the lamp from the lock house and read the signal before she knew she had read it. She ran the beam, Mab hauled from the far bank, and Joan threw her weight on the paddle as if she meant to shove the river aside. The boat slid past the weir with a hand's width to spare.
Afterwards the three of them climbed the gate together and repainted the beams, and they agreed on one order at last, hollow over solid over hollow, though none of them would say which sister had given way first.
